JB's Transportation Debate: LRT vs. ART
The Initial LRT Buzz
-
Rumors of an LRT system in JB, accompanied by seemingly official route maps, had been circulating on social media.
-
The emergence of ART created confusion, prompting the need for clarification.
Will JB Build an LRT?
-
While not entirely dismissed, an LRT is currently not a priority for the Johor government.
-
This prioritization shift explains the introduction of ART as an alternative.
What is ART?
-
ART is described as a hybrid between a train and a bus.
-
Developed by CRRC (a Chinese rail company), similar systems operate in Shanghai, Australia, and Mexico.
-
In Malaysia, Sarawak is projected to launch its first ART route in early 2026, spanning 27.6 km.
-
ART testing has been observed in Puchong Jaya since April.
LRT vs. ART: Key Differences
-
Speed: LRT averages 40-80 kmph, while ART averages 30-60 kmph.
-
Capacity: LRT trains can carry 200-300 passengers, whereas ART carries 100-200.
Proposed ART Routes in JB
-
Three potential ART routes are being considered: Iskandar Puteri Line, Skudai Line, and The Brown Line.
-
The routes are expected to have 32 stations and span over 50 km.
-
These plans remain subject to government approval.
Why the Shift to ART?
The Johor state government's potential shift from LRT to ART is attributed to four key reasons:
- Cost: ART construction costs are significantly lower (RM7 billion) compared to LRT (RM16.7 billion). The ART project represents a lighter “test the waters” investment compared to the more financially impactful LRT investment.
- Construction Time: ART projects can be completed in approximately three years, while LRT projects in JB could take five to ten years due to extensive city planning requirements. ART is literally a plug and play concept.
- Population Density: ART is considered a more suitable solution for Johor's southern population density, minimizing the risk of underutilization. Government are concerned with minimum occupancy rates.
- Station Density: ART allows for more frequent stops, helping to alleviate traffic congestion in JB city center and along major highways. Government wants ART to achieve 20 minutes per trip. LRT stops may be too far apart, compared to ART.
Gavin's Personal Opinion and Concluding Thoughts
-
Gavin believes ART is worth exploring, ideally launched before the Rapid Transit System (RTS).
-
He suggests prioritizing ART's implementation and testing before the RTS launch to streamline the testing phase.
-
He advises against placing excessive reliance on the LRT project due to its uncertainty, especially when making purchasing decision. The ART program is the one that can be leverage in the near future, especially for real estate investment.
