Navigating Another Layoff: A Personal Account
Six months into my new job, I found myself in a familiar, unwelcome situation: laid off. It wasn't something I anticipated this year, but in hindsight, maybe I should have seen it coming. While this wasn't my first experience with a layoff, it doesn't get any easier.
The Foreboding Signs
The day before, I noticed a meeting scheduled with my manager for the next morning. Initially, I didn't think much of it. However, after noticing that HR had a meeting scheduled at the exact same time, alarm bells started ringing. The next morning, I checked my PTO request and saw my balance had been zeroed out. At that point, I knew what was coming.
The Layoff Meeting
The meeting confirmed my fears. The representative informed me of the "decision to end [my] employment, effective today." They thanked me for my time and walked me through the details of the severance package. After a brief and somber goodbye, I was left to process the news.
The Aftermath and Job Search
It's been about two months since the layoff, and the tech market seems even more challenging than last year. Tech, once the industry of choice, now feels unstable, with layoffs becoming increasingly common.
I'm actively applying for jobs and have had a few interviews. I've also observed roles being posted, removed, and then reposted repeatedly. This makes me question whether companies are truly hiring, given the current climate.
A Message of Solidarity
I don't have all the answers, but I wanted to share my experience. For anyone else going through a similar situation, I encourage you to stay strong and continue applying for jobs. It may take time, but it will happen. Remember, you are not alone.
