Happy belated birthday and welcome to another episode. Today, I'll be talking about how you can move to Johor Bahru (JB) to achieve the FIRE lifestyle – Financial Independence, Retire Early.

Understanding FIRE

Many are familiar with the FIRE acronym. It's about pursuing financial independence early to retire early, or even later.

My Personal Journey

Sixteen years ago, in 2009, I moved to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur, like many Malaysians at the time. This still happens today. We came to Singapore seeking better opportunities and higher salaries in Singapore dollars. We could earn two to three times more than in Malaysia. These higher earnings definitely help in pursuing FIRE. Singapore's proximity and cultural similarity made the transition easier.

In 2012, I left my job and became self-employed. By 2016, I had started my first business. Now, in 2025, I consider myself financially stable, although not completely financially independent. I still have work to do and loans to pay, as well as savings goals for my children and family.

Retirement Age Considerations

I'm 43 this year. I'm hoping to semi-retire by 45, if things go well, and certainly before 65. In Singapore, the retirement age is currently 63, gradually increasing to 68. The government is considering raising it to 65 and then 70 by 2030. I believe many don't want to work until 65, or would prefer to work because they choose to, not because they have to.

The FIRE Movement in Singapore

The FIRE movement is alive and well in Singapore. Many, including those my age or younger, seek ways to achieve this lifestyle. It's a prudent approach, especially given that job security isn't what it used to be. Planning for FIRE early is important due to the uncertainties of the current job market.

FIRE and Johor Bahru (JB)

A key element of achieving FIRE, especially for Singaporeans and Malaysians working in Singapore, is embracing a FIRE lifestyle in JB. I strongly believe in this and am planning my own FIRE journey in JB.

JB: Not Just About Saving Money

Moving to JB isn't solely about cutting costs. Many with substantial savings are choosing JB to improve their lifestyle. Mr. Loo from 1M65, a financially savvy individual, also moved to JB to leverage his funds for a better life. It's about enhancing your retirement lifestyle. Instead of struggling financially, you can maintain the same income but enjoy a significantly higher quality of life in JB.

Inflation and JB

With rising costs of living a major concern in Singapore, JB offers a solution. Singaporeans are mitigating inflationary pressures by living in JB. I've met many Singaporeans who have moved to JB, enjoying a better life with the same or less money.

Focusing on the "Why" of JB Retirement

I won't delve into specific financial advice, as there are plenty of resources available. Instead, I want to discuss the concept of considering partial or full retirement in JB to achieve a better life earlier, at 45, 50, or any age you're comfortable with.

Visiting JB: The First Step

If you're unfamiliar with JB, the first step is to visit. JB is much safer than many think. Thousands of Singaporeans visit regularly. Start as a tourist. As you spend more time there, you'll become more comfortable and open to the possibilities JB offers. I've seen Singaporeans who initially only visited JB a year or two ago, now being very familiar with the area and exploring places I haven't even been. They are embracing a more fulfilling retirement lifestyle in JB, achieving financial freedom sooner.

With the MRT extension from Woodlands to JB expected by the end of 2026, there will be even fewer reasons not to visit. You'll find JB more enjoyable and safer than you expect.

The Advantage of Singaporean Retirees

Singaporeans have a significant advantage, particularly the "sandwich generation" of retirees. Many have fully paid off their HDB (public housing) flats. By renting out these flats, they can generate income. For example, $3,000 SGD of rental income in Singapore translates to over RM10,000 in JB, easily enough for a couple to live comfortably.

Even today, this is a viable option for older individuals who own their homes outright. Combined with small business ventures in JB, and other income sources like CPF payouts or dividend income, you can live comfortably and enjoy a higher quality of life in JB.

Personal Motivations for FIRE in JB

I am motivated to pursue FIRE because I want to spend more time with my children while I'm still active and energetic. My youngest daughter was born when I was 40, making her 23 now. I want to be present and involved in their lives, supporting their education and future. Retiring in JB makes this possible for me.

Conclusion: Embracing the JB FIRE Lifestyle

I hope this video has been helpful in considering how to achieve FIRE through a JB-based lifestyle. I've spoken with many Singaporeans, both older and younger, who are seriously considering this. It's encouraging to see people in their 20s and 30s planning to move to JB to achieve FIRE.
