Exploring Kuala Lumpur's Longest Night Market: A Food Adventure
I was really looking forward to this! It's the kind of place with that wok hei flavor.
Discovering the Setia Alam Night Market
Today is Saturday, and you know what that means: it's time to visit my favorite place, the night market! We've come to what's claimed to be Kuala Lumpur's longest night market – the Setia Alam night market. I am not sure if it is the biggest, but definitely the longest one. Let's see what delicious treats we can find here.
- I've brought 100 Ringgit to see how much good food I can get.
- Here we go!
The smell of stinky tofu hits you right at the entrance!
First Impressions
This night market seems to have a lot of food options. There's Muar Otak-Otak, dry-tossed noodles, and more! And it's not hot today, but super breezy, as it just finished raining. Let's see what tasty food we can find!
Food Finds and Fan Encounters
Wow, there's Taiwanese fried chicken! And it's pretty big, at only 10 Ringgit. The prices here seem reasonable.
- I even spotted the Tiramisu stall I saw a few days ago at the satellite night market!
- I see fruit for sale too! Apples, 7 for 10 Ringgit (I must remember to buy some on the way back, since I feel apples are pretty expensive here!)
- Avocados are 10 Ringgit for two.
Penang Char Kway Teow
I see a Penang Char Kway Teow stall with a huge queue. It must be good! Looks like many bloggers have visited here. I'll order one with duck egg and add Chinese sausage for that smoky flavor (as recommended by members previously).
- "I want the prawn and sausage, duck egg fried kway teow and mee mix, spicy".
- They don't have mobile payment... Uh oh I only have a 50 note, which they cannot break.
- I'm number 22. I will come back later.
I just met a fan! He said he saw me in Klang yesterday, but I didn't leave the house. It must have been a video he watched. He recommends their Char Kway Teow! It seems my food hunting skills are on point.
Exploring the Vast Night Market
I want to get some Bing Cheng Muachi, Korean seaweed rice rolls and Vietnamese spring roll.
- This place has a lot of Southeast Asian food!
- There's a whole other street!
This is U-shaped. I'll have to circle back later. That person is coughing, and there is even a child doing so behind. I think I'm tearing up because I can really smell the Thai basil pork rice aroma! This night market is HUGE.
- I cannot see the end of it!
- This is the Tiramisu stall I visited in a satellite night market!
This market has so many stalls because it is Saturday, so people are free to set up stalls! What about my char kway teow? Since I'm number 22, and they're only up to number 10, I will keep wandering around. There are even Durian sellers.
- Was that thunder?
- It's raining! I hope it doesn't get too heavy.
- The Tiramisu stall now has a queue of 20-30 people.
Tiramisu Temptation
There are so many flavours! Original, Japanese Matcha, White Peach Oolong, Yam, Strawberry, Mango, Earl Grey... They're making them fresh here! They sold 5 boxes by 5:30PM. These are the achievements of their shop!
- They also sell strawberries.
- The Tiramisu guy is so careful, making sure every slice is exactly the same.
I'll get one original and one yam flavour. Having only one isn't worth it with such a long queue. Hello to another fan! The little girl is 7 years old and in Grade 1! I'm so happy to meet fans.
Chicken, Noodles and More!
On the way back to get my Char Kway Teow, I found a Taiwanese fried chicken stall. It smells amazing!
- Let me get a big piece of that!
- How much is it? 12 Ringgit.
- This little dog is so cute! It's a pomeranian. Aww it's wearing diapers!
I need to pick up my Char Kway Teow! It's been over half an hour. I bet it's been ready for ages. I was lining up for Tiramisu!
- Wow, there's even a Beijing pancake.
- It's here! About time, I'm number 22.
Fish Ball Noodles
I am getting a small bowl of Fish Ball Noodles to eat here.
- "I want this Lai Fun (Rice Noodle)".
- Finally, I can sit down. I'm covered in sweat!
- Old fans know what I am looking for...
Nine Ringgit! Thank you. I'm not having Laksa today, changing things up a bit. There's fried tofu skin, fish tofu, and fish balls. Is that fish cake? I ordered Lai Fun, but I don't know what it is. This looks very light. Let's try it! Without any seasoning. The noodles are very bouncy. It's like eating the noodles from hot and sour noodles! I'm adding some light soy sauce. It needs more flavour. These fish balls are really springy. The noodles are very plain without any chili.
- There's some sort of sauce (it's black coloured soy sauce) I will try adding.
- I should ask for Chili!
- There's Chili on the table with calamansi lime!
They said this chilli sauce has to be dipped, not poured. The sauce is spicy. The calamansi lime tastes like Vietnamese pho. It is great with chili! That flavor is perfect for my tastes. The fish tofu and fish balls are springy, and the fish ball soup is fresh. I'm trying the fried tofu skin - so satisfying! The weather is so hot, but I still want to drink the soup!
Chicken and Kway Teow Time
The fried chicken is cut up. It's not crispy anymore because I left it too long, but the flavour is still good. The chicken flavour is strong, thick and fragrant with cumin and chili. It's okay, but not super juicy.
- Time for the Char Kway Teow! They gave me some chili sauce.
- I'm excited about this one, I have heard it's good!
It's a mix of noodles and kway teow just as I asked! It tastes good with a strong chive flavour. This one has duck egg.
- This one has Chinese sausage. That is why it's so expensive.
- It has lots of toppings, especially fish tofu!
- The prawns are big! The duck egg is very fragrant.
I think this is Penang Char Kway Teow. This is also peppery! The bean sprouts are crunchy. This one has more toppings than noodles. The noodles are spicy! I wish this was downstairs at my home, I would eat either this, or the other stall daily. Try to mix around and eat both! The Char Kway Teow is amazing.
Tiramisu Time
I have to eat it within half an hour, or I need to put it in the fridge.
- Wow, it's huge!
- It smells so delicious and so fragrant!
The cocoa powder is great, and the animal cream is silky and smooth. The coffee flavour is strong. I know the body guard is going to love it. If frozen it would be even better! There is no gelatin in this, so it must be eaten cold! The cream is generous and has a double layered sponge cake. This cream is so delicious, and it is also not too sweet. I think I could eat all of it! I will leave half for you.
The Yam Tiramisu is also great! The Yam has particles, like I'm eating cream. There is a thick layer of Yam. They are both so delicious. Yam is a little bit sweeter, probably because the coffee is more bitter. It has yam beans inside! I should take it home and freeze it for 30 minutes. Then it will taste better!
More Exploring and Local Snacks
I really haven't even seen half of the market. I'm getting some chrysanthemum tea - I need to cut down on sweets, and stick to dieting. It is the balance of eating the delicious food then dieting after. Thank you. Now I am really going to get drenched in the rain because the rain is getting heavier.
- There's a fish cake stall.
- I would like to try some local snacks.
- I need to get something to eat on the way home.
Local Snacks
You want to watch and learn this! There are people selling chicken and fish (still alive!).
- There are 50c, 1 Ringgit, 4 Ringgit, and 2.5 Ringgit skewers.
- Let me get some fish tofu. They use local chili for everything! I think this is like a Yong Tau Foo.
This looks yummy! A quick snack for 2RM. This Yong Tau Foo has no utensils.
- Let's eat it at the hotel!
- The taxi price is reasonable!
Back at the Hotel: Snack Review
It is not raining in our part of town! This is the snack that I got from the market. Today at the night market was interesting because it rained so much! It gave me a pair of chopsticks from the other food I bought.
- Let's taste test this fish tofu with the dark sauce!
- I wonder if this is too salty.
- I can't understand her because she speaks Malay! I did hear "twenty"!
It is not Salty! I need water because it is sweet! That is not chilli sauce, I want water. It is a sugar sauce with no taste. What is the flavour? It is too sweet. You need to taste it to see.
- Wow, I can't believe the flavour.
- Let me try with the other sauce, maybe it's spicy!
The second sauce is even sweeter. What? Haha. That taste is terrible. It is like sweet noodles that are good to eat with a sweet chilli. I've decided it's best without any sauce. The fish tofu and vegetables taste better without sauce. Maybe with a small drop of chilli. The Malaysia flavours are different compared to Chinese sauces. Their snacks and flavours do not suit our taste. It tastes better plain like Japanese food.
I need to wash and shower. It's the first day of my period. I feel very wet and cold. You can all like and subscribe to this. Remember to click the subscribe button, your support is my energy and motivation. See you next time.
Final Thoughts
Tonight's Top One is the Char Kway Teow! It's the top of the night! The others were OK, but second place!
You can watch our other videos too, such as the Bak Kut Teh.
