Life Coaching: A Therapist's Perspective
Hello everyone! Today we're discussing life coaching and what I, as a licensed therapist, think about it. This video is based on my observations and experiences shared by patients and friends, as I haven't personally worked with a life coach.
Understanding Life Coaching Certification
Certified vs. Self-Proclaimed Life Coaches
It's essential to differentiate between certified life coaches and individuals who simply call themselves life coaches. While both might offer assistance, certification ensures formal training.
The Certification Process
Becoming a certified life coach involves completing a training program and obtaining certification. One route is through the International Coach Federation, although regulations may vary by location. A certified coach typically has 300-500 coaching hours of experience.
The Potential Benefits of Life Coaching
Providing Perspective and Motivation
Life coaches can be helpful by providing a fresh perspective and a "kick in the pants" to propel you towards your goals. Advice and action items from someone outside your immediate circle can be surprisingly effective.
Limitations of Life Coaching
When Mental Health Issues Arise
Life coaches are not equipped to diagnose or treat mental illnesses. If you suspect a mental health issue, it's crucial to involve a therapist in your care.
Collaboration Between Therapists and Life Coaches
As a therapist, I'm open to collaborating with life coaches to provide comprehensive support, ensuring everyone is on the same page. The boundary lies between needing support and advice versus treating a mental illness.
Concerns Regarding Life Coaches
Potential Hindrance to Therapy
Some mental health professionals dislike life coaches, especially those without certifications, as they might interfere with patient treatment. I've heard of cases where life coaches contradicted therapists or psychiatrists, slowing progress.
Variability in Quality
Like any profession, there are excellent and ineffective life coaches. I have encountered life coaches who were unreliable or unsupportive, although I haven't personally experienced direct conflicts with patient treatment.
The Increasing Popularity of Life Coaching
A Positive Trend
I view the growing trend of life coaching positively, as it encourages people to discuss their feelings and seek guidance.
The Importance of Credentials
It's crucial to ensure your life coach has some level of credentials and training. Look for someone who listens, is trustworthy, and supports you. Seek recommendations from friends to find a suitable coach.
Seeking Support and Encouragement
Ultimately, any form of help and support is beneficial. If you are considering life coaching, I encourage you to give it a try.
