Gaining followers on X (formerly Twitter) can seem daunting. When I first started, it took me a year to reach 1,000 followers. However, I discovered a six-step method that dramatically increased my growth. I went from gaining about 100 followers a month to over 500. This method works, even for ordinary people.
1. Start Posting Immediately
Many people overthink their first posts, spending too much time researching. The best way to learn is by doing. Interpret and act on data, but you need data first! Don't worry about perfection initially. Aim to post at least once daily and reply to every comment you receive. This makes people more likely to engage with you again.
2. Define Your Niche
After forming a posting habit, focus on your niche. You might already know what you want to talk about, but if not, experiment with different topics. Niching down is crucial, especially when starting out. People are interested in topics, so consistently create content within your chosen niche to attract a relevant audience. For instance, my growth accelerated significantly when I focused solely on X monetization.
3. Manual Promotion Through Engagement
Unlike other platforms, X requires manual promotion to get noticed. Reply to other people's posts in your niche. Create a list of relevant accounts and dedicate 30 minutes each day to engaging with their content. Building relationships through genuine comments is key. Don't overthink your responses; just share your immediate thoughts. If you find a new account of interest, interact with their content, follow them, and they may follow you back.
4. Create High-Quality Content
Manual promotion has its limits; to truly "blow up", you need high-quality content that the algorithm favors. High-quality content provides value. Can you explain what value your content provides in one sentence? The X algorithm prioritizes engagement, which includes any interaction, such as bookmarks, shares, and even detail expands. Don't focus on any single metric; all engagement helps.
5. Optimize Your Profile
An optimized profile is essential when one of your posts goes viral. Think of your profile as a landing page.
-
Profile Picture: A clear, recognizable photo that aligns with your brand is crucial for a good first impression.
-
Bio: Your bio should concisely explain what followers can expect from your content. In essence, after people view your profile picture and bio, they ultimately make their decision based on your content. Your previous posts serve as evidence that you're worth following.
6. Create a Sustainable System
Sustainable growth requires a system. Life is busy, so create a system to stay on track.
-
Preheating the Oven: Every morning, before my first post, I reply to 15-20 other accounts. This helps warm up the algorithm.
-
Comment Engagement: After posting, I reply to as many comments as possible.
-
Spacing Posts: I post two to three times a day, leaving at least three hours between posts. This concentrates engagement on each post.
-
Content Preparation: My first post of the day is usually written in advance from my drafts folder.
-
Trending Topics: The other posts often relate to trends or conversations in my niche.
Focus on following your system rather than outcomes. If you show up consistently, you will gain followers. I was in your position a year ago, and this system worked for me.
