Hong Kong Food Adventure: Redemption and New Discoveries

Back in Hong Kong, I'm revisiting some culinary spots I missed during my last food adventure. Based on your recommendations, I'm diving into iconic eateries and unique treats, including one place that previously gave me a very hard time! So get ready for a taste of Hong Kong!

Australia Dairy Company: A Second Chance

The first stop is the Australia Dairy Company. Many viewers suggested it, but I have a history here. Six years ago, I was actually kicked out for filming! Luckily, I've learned that filming is allowed now, and that the service is known for being a bit…direct. This time, I'm determined to have a better experience.

There's always a line outside, but it moves quickly. Inside, I'm at a shared table with several other people. The menu boasts various macaroni dishes, and I'm eager to try the hot Coke, a variety of macaroni, and especially the egg sandwich. Ordering in Cantonese felt like the right move.

Surprisingly, a waiter even offered me an English menu! Within minutes, my chassiu tongen (macaroni with barbecued pork) arrived. The question was, where's the pork? It was hidden at the bottom, but there was plenty! Then came the legendary egg sandwich, with thick, chunky, buttery toast and fluffy scrambled eggs. It was worth the six-year wait!

The macaroni was a bit bland at first. The broth was simple, letting the taste of the pasta come through. However, my table mates suggested adding white pepper, which definitely improved the flavor. The hot Coke was exactly as expected, hot Coke with a mellow sweetness.

Overall, the experience exceeded my expectations. It's a fast-paced place, not for lounging around, but the egg sandwich was phenomenal and worth revisiting.

Beef Satay Noodles: A Local Favorite

Next up, I'm at a bing sutt (Hong Kong-style cafe) to try the beef satay noodles, a highly requested item. The aroma is enticing! It's basically instant noodles topped with flavorful satay beef.

The beef is incredibly tender, and the satay sauce is rich, peanutty, and slightly sweet – amazing! Mixing it with the noodles is good, though I'm not the biggest fan of instant noodles. The beef is definitely the star of this dish. I'm surprised it's considered a breakfast dish, given its strong flavors; I'd prefer it for lunch or dinner.

These bing sutts offer so many food choices! I definitely need more trips to try everything.

Mooncakes: A Mid-Autumn Festival Tradition

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, I'm visiting Maan, my favorite brand, to stock up on mooncakes. They even gave me some samples for a taste test.

  • Double Salted Egg Yolk with Lotus Paste: A traditional favorite, known for selling out quickly. The saltiness of the egg yolk complements the sweetness of the lotus paste perfectly.

  • Lava Custard Mooncake: A newer, extremely popular flavor, so much so that counterfeits have appeared. The creamy, custardy filling is delicious, with a sweet and salty flavor profile.

  • Snowy Mooncake (Yang Zhi Gan Lu Flavor): This flavor is inspired by the mango pomelo dessert I enjoyed on my last trip to Hong Kong. It's meant to be eaten cold. The outer layer is soft and mochi-like, with a harder inner layer. It's refreshing, fruity, and less dense than traditional mooncakes.

Mandarin Oriental Scones: A Bougie Experience

Continuing with round, sweet pastries, I'm heading to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for their famous scones paired with rose petal jam. Some viewers told me that people come from all over to try these scones!

Navigating to the Mandarin Cake Shop feels a little intimidating, but the cake shop is tucked away, making it feel secret and special. The scone costs $148 HKD (around $19 USD) and comes with clotted cream and the iconic rose petal jam. I chose the "Taste of Legend" tea to accompany it, with spicy notes of vanilla and cocoa caramel.

The scone is perfect – not too crumbly or moist. The rose petal jam is like a high-quality strawberry jam with the perfect amount of rose flavor. It has a crumbly cookie like exterior, reminscent of shortbread. The tea has a natural caramel-like flavor that complements the scone beautifully.

I highly recommend this experience for a taste of luxury without the cost of a hotel stay.

That concludes this food adventure. Thanks for watching, and let me know what I should try next! Until next time, bye from Hong Kong!
